  • Save ‘N Smile Family Video Contest – $2,000 College Tuition
    by FilmTheNextStaff
    Posted

Saving for college can be a daunting task. So much so that, sadly, many families forgo it altogether. Yet, recent reports show that children “with a savings account in their name are approximately six times more likely to attend college than those with no account.” So that got the folks at RAISE Texas (RaiseTexas.org) thinking about how they could help make creating secondary education savings accounts easier. For the first time, going on now, RAISE Texas presents its statewide 2011-2012 Save ‘n SMILE Family Video Contest.

Create a video, three minutes or less, that shares what a RAISE Texas $2000 college savings account deposit would mean to your family. What does your child want to be when he or she grows up and how can a college degree help achieve his or her dreams?

Winners will receive actual tuition startup dollars — in their own names. For one grand prize winner, RAISE Texas will create a Texas Tuition Promise Fund in that child’s name of $2000. That means $2000 to kickstart his or her Texas state 529 plan, geared towards prepayment of undergraduate resident tuition and required fees at any Texas public college or university. Just think… for some state community colleges, that could be an entire year of tuition covered! Plus, two runners-up will receive Texas Tuition Promise Funds in the amount of $250. Good luck!

  • Tenlegs’ TED Talk Video Contest – $5,000
    by FilmTheNextStaff
    Posted

Jonathan Haidt is a Professor in the Social Psychology area of the Department of Psychology at the University of Virginia. He will be giving a presentation at the 2012 Ted Talks convention and is looking for some help from the video/film community.

The topic of his TED talk is “hive psychology” – the ability humans have to lose themselves, temporarily and ecstatically, in something larger than themselves. In his TED talk, he will begin by illustrating three ways to flip the switch: nature experiences, religious experiences, and military. To accompany this demonstration, he is looking for three short videos (animated, live action or a mix of both), 15-25 seconds each, to show on the big screen, which will be incorporated into his talk.

Your task is to create these videos which communicate visually the three life-altering experiences. Ultimately, the spot should help reinforce the points made by Prof. Haidt. Your efforts could earn you a cool $5,000. Visit the contest page to submit your proposal for the videos today!

Mofilm is also giving viewers the chance at some big cash by encouraging you to share the videos with others.
